This stuff is done all the time. The correct way to do it is too write a check to the lein holder for the amount of the payoff. Take the bike and when you get the title pay the seller the rest of the money.

If you fax a notorized bill of sale to the lein holder they should send the title directly to you when they are paid off...

my friend just bought a used ninja 250 from a woman. He just started so he wanted to go small. He had a bil of sale, notorized and everything. Copied down driver licenses and met at their house with the address matching the guy's face and what not. He took the bike home, but thing was that he couldn't ride the bike because of insurance and what not.

It does require a little bit of more work with a lien. But if its a really good price, tell him 1k down is way too much. Tell him you'd give him $200 or something. Put that down in the bill of sale with the price he agrees to sell it to you for and put down that you put $200 in deposit and you owe X-$200 amount. Get a cashier's check with his name on it, not just Cash. That way you can track that he put it in his bank account just in case something does come up. Don't give him cash as a deposit. I bought my car from a co-worker for around $7k and i gave him $300 down. Took the car home and checked it out. Lent him mine for the time being so he wasn't without a car. But def no more than $200 deposit on that bike. Make sure you bring a someone with you as a witness. When i bought my bike with cash, I took a picture of every serial number on the benjamins. I know it won't help much, but i'm sure if he was scamming something, he's not going to put $3k in the bank account.

I basically told the guy to go fuck himself, too old for this back and forth bullshit. Not the way I like to do business. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Bikes with leins are sold all the time, as are cars. It's really not a big deal and banks are used to dealing with these situations all the time. Of course if the guy can get the cash to pay it off first, that's a big help. 1k down is a little steep, but if you decide to buy another bike, realize that you shouldnt buy the bike, or change your mind for any other reason, he now owes somebody a lot of money until he sells the bike.

to what Ralph said basically... and hey, my 01 zx6r is for sale and I *DO* have title in hand.
