thanks for all the responses. i am definately planning on taking a class. i am having trouble finding classified ads for bikes at reasonable prices in my area...any suggestions?

Welcome, as far as finding bikes, just keep your eyes peeled and look everywhere. Ebay has some, but be sure you're not being messed with, and only buy bikes you can drive to and inspect first. Be sure whatever you choose has a valid title.
