it has a vacation mode where you can turn down the heat and just keep the water warm but not sure how much gas you'd save

i will still drain it manually once a year

And still settles over time, you still need to drain it some each year.

"self cleaning" just means that it swirls the water around more than the old style heater. The crap is still in the water.
