Oil creates way too much drag to have anything actually splashing it around.

Clutch only gets oil when running. It sits well above the oil level.

or maybe there was still moisture in the crank case

rusted even sitting in oil

The thing sat so long the clutch plates were all rusted......never saw that before.

Good deal, even though it needed new clutch plates.
