If I'm not mistaken, the NSR500's were all
two stroke Grand Prix racing machines.
So there aren't that many available, and they
were most likely ridden by a few of the very
best riders. Honda won 10 or 11 championships
with the NSR series bikes.

yea, i guess if they are merely collectors items... but as far as bikes go they don't seem to be anything special compared to bikes of today... considering these are going for 50,000 +

I'd say they're bordering collector's status, and you're right, they're nothing like modern day bikes, they're way nastier and far less forgiving on the track.

Strictly a museum piece
the $100,000 price tag on that bike on ebay might actually be justified considering that Honda wanted $30,000 for the NR750 which was a commercially available collectible. The GP bikes are not often available for sale unless you are a wealthy insider.

Yup...all 2-smoke racebikes are like that, shrinks down in the can to create the right amount of backpressure in the expansion chambers.

Their are two versions of the NSR500; The NSR500V2 and the NSR500V4. Before the switch over to 990cc 4-strokes Honda used the V4 for the facotry teams and the satellite teams got the V2. The V2 was a bit down on power over the V4 but did get a weight break.
Back in '98 for example Doohan, Okada, Criville, Biaggi, Kocinski, Checa and Barros were on the NSR500V4 while Borja, Gibernau, van de Goorbergh, McCoy, Gimbert, Wait, Carpani and Smart were on the NSR500V2.

The NR750 had a MSRP of $60,000.00 not $30,000.00.

Nothing special about these bikes? Runs about 140 hp, and less than 250 lbs. That's nothing to scoff at. Plus, notice the carbon disc brakes! Wooooooooo!
Maintenance would be a bitch though, considering parts availability may be a problem.

Once 'pure' racebikes become last years model, parts production ceases. Unless something from another model will fit/work, you have to make replacement parts.

There is no back pressure, they're mainly silencers.

The stingers are mearly silencers and have nothing to do with back pressure LOL!
As the exhaust gases expand into the expansion chamber, they create a vacuum at the exhaust port. This vacuum pulls fuel/oil/air into the cylinder.
As the shock wave of the exhaust pulse hits the end of the expansion chamber, it echoes back, pushing any fuel/oil/air that got pulled through the exhaust port back into the cylinder.
By pulling extra fuel/oil/air through the cylinder and then pushing it back in, the expansion port has the effect of stuffing more fuel/oil/air into the cylinder on each stroke. This gives the engine extra power in the same way that a turbocharger does with out any moving parts.
ok I am back to lurker mode.
