I was splitting on 36 last year, horrid traffic, it was moving slow as shit, and i was melting from the heat. Of course, I go right by a cop hidden behind some bushes. Knowing I was already f'd since I was on the shoulder at that moment, I pulled over before he even managed to get his lights on.

Luckily, I got a reasonable cop, explained the situation, and because I wasn't a dick (ie: stopped when I knew he would be getting me anyways), he didn't care. He did, however, tell me where there were other cops who actually hate anyone not on a cruiser (arrogant fucks deserving of the term "pig"), and where they hid; which was nice.

Honestly, I don't wish harm on the guy, I just wish he'd make better choices in future. My wife was driving at the time but normally when I see bikes splitting and it's heavy traffic, I'll move over as far as I can to give them space, I really don't care if they split.

I used to split a bit but only in stop go traffic and only very slowly. Speed differential is critical (as with any kind of riding really), if people are only going 10 or 15, I'll be going 20 or so. Once traffic starts moving at a reasonable speed, I'll get back into line.

Last year, I was coming south on the Palisaides and traffic was stopped. There was a couple of guys road raging behind me (running each other off the road and whatnot, you know, the usual). I didn't really feel like waiting for them to arrive so I split. We got to the top of a hill, and there was a cop who stopped all the bikes that had been splitting. He was going to give us all tickets but there was a very serious accident up the road and didn't want to waste time I guess. I did exactly what he asked when he asked while some of the other guys were arguing. He sent us across the service road onto the northbound side and told us to get out of there. We did. I got on 9W, went past the accident and rejoined an empty Palisaides Parkway.

Splitting isn't something that is appropriate all the time IMO but in certain situations (stopped at a light in NYC or on highways where traffic's backed up) I think it should be legal. People like Mr. Douchey McDoucherson should quit splitting when it's totally unnecessary.
