Rain Tires
Whats the shelf life for a set of rains...picked a spare set of rims(thanks again Jeff) and thinking of slapin on some rains just to have.

dont keep them outside or in a trailer. keep them out of sunlight, in a cool dark place and they'll last for years pretty much as with any elastomer.

Was talkin to Ron, he suggested the Dunlops, says they're the best rain tire out so I guess I'll give them a whirl... |
You know rains are really meant for a very wet track. It should be raining when you use them. If the track is just damp you will burn up the rains quickly.

When it comes to rain tires, You'll want it to be raining pretty good to use them. If it stops raining during your session, you'll be playing point and shoot from puddle to puddle to keep them from burning up. Personally, I normally use Bridgestone BT002's and never had a slip or slide in the rain. Throttle control and smoothness is the key to success in the rain. I have a set of used rains I got from Ron about 2-3 years ago, never needed them. Chances are, if it's raining hard enough for raintires, They're gonna stop your track session. If you want these raintires, let me know. I think they are 180/120 combo. Also have a set of slicks for sale. 2 track "sessions" not days on them. Anyone??

Personally I was very impressed with the way my pilot powers handled the rain at VIR at the end of july this year... The first 2 sessions it was raining pretty good, had slowed down by the 3rd a bit and had stopped after the third during the lunch break... 4th session was after lunch and the track was already half dry. 4th session was my little mishap and that was completely rider error... Tires didnt slip at all on the track... I can speak from personal experience that they suck on wet grass, however.
If you have the extra set of rims, it makes sense, but plenty of people ride out there with regular tires, and its not bad at all... I actually look forward to doing it again because it forces you to rearrange your priorities from a normal track day... |
